After entering cosmetology school at the young age of 15, Shelly Van Pelt knew hair was her business. Through a co-op program with her high school in Ann Arbor Michigan, she completed 1500 hours and went straight to work refining her cutting skills at Master Cuts. After 4 years, she decided it was time to move on. Wanting to study color and extensions, she found the Queen of Color and King of Extensions,Jesse and Flo Briggs at the Yellow Strawberry in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We traveled out into the heart of Florida and into bear country. This interview pertains to the topic of Booth renting. Speaking to Donna was a joy, and getting solid information, and also advice on Booth renting was well documented. Having interviewed brought a wealth of information to the viewer. Donna Pederson’s Biography:

I grew up, the youngest of eleven children, in Massachusetts. I loved going with my mother to her weekly salon visits. I was fascinated watching the stylists manipulate hair into works of art. It made sense to me. I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

I went to the local Vocational, Technical High School, (much to my father’s chagrin) to pursue Cosmetology. I was fortunate to have talented instructors who taught me the importance of perfecting my basics, and practice, practice, PRACTICE.

After apprenticing and working as a stylist in Boston for 8 years, I made the move to Florida. As a Master Colorist, I live and work in an area that lets me practice my craft to my fullest extent.

I love what I do. I feel privileged and honored to be a part of our industry.

Donna Pederson

When he was just 16 years old, Maurice Tidy became the Artistic Director for Vidal Sassoon. He owned salons in New York where he cut hair for such stars as Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and Naomi Campbell.

Now he works out of Landis on Calhoun street. That’s where his next great idea was born — a new program to give free hair cuts to the unemployed called Hair Care.

“We have done over 3,500 heads of hair so far,” said Tidy. “Let’s see, if we help a few people and make them feel better, so if they go for an interview or just to make them feel better about themselves.”

So far he has traveled to eight different states. The project now has 140 people behind it all giving their time for a cause in which they believe.

“Every one of them have done it out of their heart. The salon owners, hair dressers. They have all jumped on board and it’s been absolutely sensational,” said Tidy.

Maurice says even though he cuts a lot of hair for free, he’s paid in something other than money. “We have had stories where people have had really rough times. A few of them have actually come in and get their hair done, they feel better and go on an interview and they get a job,” said Tidy.

It’s a result this world-renowned stylist hopes to see again and again.

The project began long ago as a dream – a dream of bringing visions alive for women, brides, and stylists. And through our own inspiration, we were able to make this dream a reality.

After many 10 to 12 hour days, long photo shoots, and lots of learning, Bliss was born.

During the creation of this book, we utilized our own database of models – these are real women, each with her own unique “look.” As a result, we have a beautiful range of women covering our pages. This, in turn, was our goal. When women look through our book, we want them to visualize themselves on the pages and see themselves in the hairstyles. And we think we’ve accomplished that.
